Why does my AVI file DVD not play on the Panasonic DMR-EX98V Divx player?

When I buy a DVD I always make one copy for when I travel or watch it down a mates house. This way the original never leaves my home or gets scratched. Anyway I was down my mates house and I wanted to watch Lord of the Rings on his Panasonic Divx player but it said incompatibale file. I used Nero 7 to copy it and I can watch it on my home Sony Divx player but not the Panasonic. Why not?
