before you do anything.. enter your bios (you will see instructions such as press f2 to enter setup) first and check that your first boot device is set to correctly boot from your first hard disk (containing the operating system). in my own experience, sometimes a bad shutdown or crash can cause the drive settings to be reset.. so the drive configuration needs to be corrected. double check the drive cables inside the case are connected firmly to the drive and board. remember to touch a metal part of the case to protect against static damage and remove the power cable before attempting this. if there is a cd/dvd in your drive when booting, remove it. if that doesnt help.. your compaq might have a recovery partition to recover your OS to factory default settings but be aware that this could destroy all data on the drive.
