recovering a compaq thats been upgraded?

i have a Compaq Pissaro 5000 that had windows ME and i had it upgraded to windows xp a few years ago. i want to do a recovery on the computer. i did it once before but forgot how to do it again. i tryed putting in the original recovery disk and it showed compaq in red across a black screen and then it goes to a black screen with words in white and it just keeps doing thoese two things over and over again when i put in the upgrade disk it dosent have anywhere to recover. please help! and thanks soo much in advance!!!!!!
