Why did my hard drive break?

My sony vaio laptop recently stopped working, all it would do when you turned it on was come up with the vaio screen then nothing. We took it to get fixed and they said it needed a new hard drive. They are fixing it under the warranty so i am assuming it was not software that did it. So what causes hard drives to break? It is only about 3-4 months old.

it is most probably a factory defect, which happens to all parts of a computer.
